Question: After the latest attacks on the London subway system, New York City Police were ordered to conduct random searches of mass transit commuters in an effort to foil would-be terrorists. Do you think this is a good idea or is it a violation of privacy? Why?
“ I think it’s a great idea right now. If we see it’s being abused we should change it. But it’s better to be safe than sorry. I also think that 99 percent of the people will not have a problem with the search.”
Ben Manning, Canarsie “It’s for everybody’s safety. Either your safe, or you could be in danger. If it’s a matter of life and death, they can check my bags. If you have nothing to hide, you shouldn’t be concerned. That’s safety for everybody.” Eria McGee, Canarsie “ I do think it’s an invasion of privacy. But I think there’s a need for it. But they can profile, which makes it an invasion of privacy. I just think that since 9/11 it’s not a safe environment. So we have to put our faith in the NYPD.”
Esther Forkowitz, Canarsie “It’s not an invasion of your privacy. After we’ve seen what happened on 9/11, and in London, people will feel safer. They can check my bags anytime.” Victoria Goluch, Starrett City |
