  • Patrol officers from the 69th Precinct were in the right place at the right time early last Sunday when they chased down a suspect who had allegedly just shot two men in front of a nightclub in northern Canarsie.

According to a report filed with the local detective squad, Officers Craig Rorro and David Olsen were on routine patrol shortly after 2 a.m. on April 30 near The Rock, 1205 Rockaway Avenue - just a block away from the precinct station house - when they heard four shots ring out. As they rushed to the source of the shots, several bystanders in front of the club yelled that the shooter was running north on foot toward Avenue D. While one of the officers called for backup and tended to the victims, who were lying on the sidewalk, the other chased the suspect and, after a short pursuit, tackled him and put him in handcuffs.

The officer arrested Jermaine Stewart, 18, of Woodruff Avenue, Brook-lyn, who they said, was found to have crack co-caine and marijuana in his possession. A 9mm automatic handgun was found nearby. In a canvass of the area later, four shell casings and a live round of ammunition were discovered.

The addresses of the wounded victims, Roger Antoine, 32, and Marcel Grant, 29, were not released. Antoine was shot once in the back and right elbow and Grant was shot in the left thigh. Police said the bullet went through his left thigh and into his right thigh. Both men were taken to Brookdale Hospital by Emergency Medical Service paramedics. They were treated and pronounced in stable condition. They both said they were shot as they fled for safety north on Rockaway Avenue after hearing the first shots.

Stewart was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance. Further charges are pending as the investigation continues, detectives said.
