Senior citizens who usually frequent the Abe Stark Senior center on Farragut Road are a hearty group. At the drop of a hat, their administrators will throw a party for them, and they’ll get out the electronic piano and start dancing up a storm. It keeps ’em young, after all.

As a result, it was natural that the center would do something special for Mother’s Day and, in a first-ever event for the facility, they announced their Grandmother of the Year Award during a luncheon-party on Tuesday, May 4.

Eliza Belle, a longtime Canarsie resident and a former educator at the JFK Day Care Center, which is located just upstairs from the Stark Center, received the distinction. A mother of eight children, grandmother of eight, and great-grandmother of eleven, Mrs. Belle was visited at the center for this special occasion by a number of her sons, daughters and grandchildren.

After the Abe Stark Center Choral Group sang praiseworthy renditions of popular songs and youngsters from the JFK Center did the same, graciously, and with a quiet demeanor, Mrs. Belle accepted the honor, obviously becoming not only the first Grandmother of the Year, but the belle of the ball.
