CIOs Recommend Networking As Start For A Successful IT Career

Networking your way to a new job holds a different meaning for information technology (IT) professionals, a new survey shows. When asked to re-commend a career path for those just entering the field, 29 percent of IT executives said network management.

The national poll includes responses from more than 1,400 ClOs from a stratified random sample of U.S. companies with 100 or more employees. It was conducted by an independent re-search firm and developed by Robert Half Technology, a leading provider of information technology professionals on a project and full-time basis.

CIOs were asked, "Which one of the following areas of specialization would you recommend to someone just beginning is or her career in information technology? Their responses:

Network management..................29%

Information security.....................18%

Help desk and end-user support...14%

Data/database management.........13%

Project management....................12%

Software development.................10%

Other/don’t know..........................4 %

"Networking expertise remains critical within IT departments as firms use their internal systems to share data companywide and power their business-critical applications," said Kath-erine Spencer Lee, executive director of Robert Half Technology. "A fundamental understanding of network man-agement is also the basis for positions in growing areas such as information systems security, wireless communica-tion, broadband and voice over Inter-net protocol (VoIP)."

Addressing the second most popular response, Lee said that organizations are actively recruiting security specialists to ensure highly reliable infrastructures and to troubleshoot hard-ware and software vulnerabilities.

"Technology professionals at all le-vels should commit to constant learning," said Dino Grigorakakis, regional manager for Robert Half Technology. "Individuals who strive to keep pace with the latest trends in IT and develop relevant experience greatly en-hance their marketability".
