By Charles Rogers
The body of a Breukelen Houses resident was discovered last Sunday night in the shower of his apartment where he had hanged himself and left a note pointing to the, the lifeless body of his wife in a nearby bedroom with a plastic bag over her head and multiple stab wounds, police said.
The bodies of Jeffrey and Tammy Johnson were discovered by a relative who immediately called police from the couple’s apartment at 617 East 108 Street.
Police said Jeffrey, 39, apparently hanged himself with an extension cord he wrapped around a pipe in the shower stall. The body of his 31-year-old wife was discovered lying face up under a bed.
Officers from the 69th Precinct Detective Squad said that, besides having the plastic bag over her head, the woman’s hands were tied in front of her, she had been stabbed multiple times and it appeared she also suffered from trauma from a blunt instrument to her head.
Police said they received a call from the relative, whose name was not released, when he and his girlfriend found the bodies. Police said a suicide note was found on the floor and another note, dropped on the floor near the man’s body, said, "Look for Tammy" and had an arrow pointing toward the bedroom where her body was found.
Police said Jeffrey Johnson had a history of domestic problems dating back to 1996. He had been arrested at least three times on assault charges, one of which occurred last January and was allegedly perpetrated on his wife. Detectives also said Jeffrey had a prior arrest on a drug charge.
The couple’s two children, ages 9 and 11, had been staying at another relative’s house for the Easter holiday. Sources said the couple had been married for 14 years.
