Kingsbrook Surgeon To Go On Humanitarian Mission To Nepal
Dr. Ravi Khothuru, boardcertified thoracic surgeon, from Kingsbrook’s Department of Surgery, is a member of the team of physicians and registered nurses who will be traveling to Khatmandu, Nepal from Match 5 through March 17, 2004.
The purpose of their visit is to provide procedural training for local doctors in both operative and postoperative patient care. Additionally they will conduct daily lectures and provide services in the areas of General, Pediatric Thoracic, Plastic and OB GYN treatments.
Although this is not their first mission, it the first one in which the team will be taking laparoscopic instruments and supplies, will also perform and teach laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures.
Besides Dr. Khothuru the team includes: Medhat Allam, MD, Vito Alamia, MD, Joe DeBellis, MD, Rajesh Patel, MD Bob Mineo, CRNA, Grace McCarthy, RN, Ellen Herfield, RN, Maryellen Spandois, RN Patricia Ticia Mitchell, RN, Hallie Murphy, RN
So far the team has gone on surgical missions to Haiti, Mexico, Honduras, and Vietnam. They have also visited Brazil, twice. "All of the medications, medical equipment and supplies that the team takes with them is as a result of the generosity of our benefactors", stated Dr. William Lois, Director of Surgical Services.. "This year we are particularly grateful to the St. Vincent Ferrer Church, in Brook-lyn, for its kind sponsorship of this mission.
However, we still need the help and support from other benefactors in order for the mission to be successful."
Dr. Lois, together with the team, extends thanks to Dr. Saroj Dhittal of Nepal for assisting with the coordination of this remarkable endeavor.
