Police from the 69th Precinct responded to repeated calls fromresidents of East 78 Street between Glenwood Road and Flatlands Avenue last Friday evening to find the body of a 22-year-old Canarsie resident lying in the street.
Michael Williams, 22, of East 78 Street, was shot numerous times in the neck, torso and head by a man who was part of a group that had apparently had a confrontation with him earlier that evening.
According to Detective Matt Collins, who is handling the case, the shooter fled on foot in an unknown direction along with his companions. Williams was taken to Brookdale Hospital by Emergency Medical Service paramedics and waspronounced dead on arrival at thehospital.
"A canvass of the area produced four spent .45 caliber shell casings and one unspent round," said Collins, "and one fragmented round was recovered at the hospital from the victim's body later during a general examination."
No one else was injured during the shooting and witnesses were being questioned during the continuing investigation.
Police sources said that the victim had a record and had just been released from prison after having served a few years on a burglary charge.
Detective Sergeant Pat Leahy refuted a report that said Williams had a "lengthy" criminal record, but noted he had been charged of attempted murder earlier this year.
The shooting was one of four that occurred on Friday night, according to published reports. The New York Times stated that, as of the beginning of the week, crime had declined by 5.6%, compared to last year.
Anyone who might have information of the Saturday shooting is asked to call Detective Collins at (718) 257-6215 or Crime Stoppers at1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will be kept strictly confidential.
