Cops Asking For Help In Solving
Police are asking for the public’s help in finding the person or persons responsible for the brutal murder of a man in an East 82 Street backyard during a giant birthday party last summer.
Detective Elizabeth Miller of the 69th Precinct Detective Squad, who is handling the case, said recently that there are very few leads in the investigation of the homicide of Anthony Ervin, 25, who was shot five times while attending the party with about 250 other people in a yard behind 1149 East 82 Street. Another man, Jameel Small, 20, of East 80 Street, was apparently an innocent bystander and was shot in the back at the same time.
"The shooting took place around 1 a.m.," Miller said, "just as the party got into full swing." She said that, after Ervin was shot, he ran north on the common backyard driveway toward Avenue K between East 82 and East 83 Street.
After being called to the scene by witnesses, responding police found the victim’s body near the rear of a house on Avenue K.
Paramedics were called and, along with representatives of the city medical examiner’s office, pronounced him dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, the wounded man, despite his injury, fled to his home near Avenue J, at which time he called 911. He was taken to Kings County Hospital and treated and released.
Detective Miller said she is following up on reports that Ervin might have been connected to the Bloods street gang, which has traditionally fought with other gangs in — and outside of — the area.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Miller at (718) 257-6215 or call NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
"Anyone who witnessed the shooting or was in the area at the time and who might remember even the slightest thing could help," said Miller. She noted that all calls, including the call to Crime Stoppers, will be kept strictly confidential.
