Man Shoots Himself In Leg; Nabbed On Gun Charge

By Charles Rogers

A man who told police last week that he was shot in the leg when two men attempted to rob him as he was leaving a local night club, was later arrested after an inquisitive detective determined the man actually shot himself.

Shirwyn Joseph, 23, of Clarendon Road, East Flatbush, had originally told 69th Precinct police that he was leaving the Club Large on Rockaway Avenue near Foster Avenue at 3:50 a.m. on Sunday, March 2 when he was accosted by two men armed with a silver gun who demanded money. Joseph said that, as he turned and fled, trying to get into his car, one of the thieves shot him in the right leg. A friend took him to Brookdale Hospital where he was treated and released.

But as he investigated the case, Detective Frank Agostini determined a number of inconsistencies in Joseph’s story.

"His actions during the investigation, coupled with some physical evidence and further interviews actually eliminated his version of the story," Agostini said. "Apparently, he shot himself as he was either cleaning the gun or showing it to someone else."

The detective arrested Joseph last Thursday and charged him with criminal possession of a weapon and filing a false report. Agostini noted the suspect had two previous gun arrests.
