Trio Convicted In Killing Of

Youth Last Thanksgiving Eve

The three killers in the murder of a Canarsie teenager on Thanksgiving eve last year were found guilty in two separate short trials.

Divine Sawyer, 22, was convicted of murder in the first degree on Monday. His brothers Mark Jones, 22, and Tareq Jones, 19, were convicted of murder in the second degree last Thursday for helping Sawyer shoot Jelani Isaac, 16, in front of McDonald’s Restaurant on Rockaway Parkway and Conklin Avenue as he and three friends were going home after buying a baking pan for Jelani’s mother for the meal the following day.

According to reports from the office of Kings County District Attorney Charles Hynes, crucial testimony came from the boys who were with Isaac on the night of the shooting.

One said they were approached by Sawyer and the Jones brothers and, after the trio stole a necklace from one of the boys, Sawyer told one of the assailants to give him a handgun, which he used to shoot Jelani as he ran south on Rockaway Parkway.

Sentencing for Sawyer and the Jones brothers will take place on October 24.
