Police Officer Jim Johnson, the 69 Precinct’s Youth Officer, has always been known as a "hands-on" kind of guy, the kind who takes action first, rather than waiting for something to happen and then acting on it.

For a police officer and as a director of a youth program, this is good, especially when it comes to handling the precinct’s youth group, the Explorers.

"I want the Explorers to be as active as possible," Johnson said recently, after returning from a trip to the Manhattan Yacht Club with the kids. "That’s why we’ve been going to a lot of places and doing a lot of things."A few of the places Johnson has been with the group includes ball games, festivals, museums and, of course, the yacht club excursion.

"There were 23 kids along with me when we went two weeks ago," Johnson said. "They were allowed to go out on the boats and experience a little bit of life on the water. It was a real learning experience and the kids loved it."

The Explorers are part of a young adult program of the Boy Scouts of America involving male and female members age 14 to 20.
