Ashley Judd stars with Samuel L. Jackson and Andy Garcia in "Blackout," a thriller set in San Francisco. Judd is a police officer investigating a murder who suddenly finds herself the subject of the investigation when her past lovers begin dying all around her. Garcia is a fellow investigator who ends up as the love interest. ... And Angelina Jolie is trying to put her personal woes aside to star in "Taking Lives" for Warner Bros. Based on the book by Michael Pye, it’s about a femme FBI profiler who must bring in a serial killer who has spent 20 years assuming the identities of people he has killed. ... Christina Applegate’s career takes a giant leap when she co-stars with Ben Affleck in "Surviving Christmas," about an affluent record executive who is faced with spending the holidays alone. To avoid this, he goes back to his childhood home and pays the family living there to pretend they are his. Christina is the well-educated scientist daughter of the household. The ending is pretty predictable from where I sit. ... Natalie Wood’s daughter, Natasha Gregson-Wagner, looks a lot like her mom, and hopefully she has some of her talent. Natasha has landed a role in a film (yet unnamed) about a bunch of mischievous teen-agers who find their lives interrupted when one of them is shot in the back and confined to a wheelchair.
