Patrol officers from the 69th Precinct joined by Housing Police and aided by alert Emergency Medical Service ambulance paramedics, chased and apprehended two suspected purse-snatchers who, cops said, may be responsible for other recent similar crimes.

According to detectives, the incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. on Monday, March 25th when the suspects had allegedly taken the purse of an elderly woman at the corner of East 102nd Street and Flatlands Avenue, directly across from the Breukelen Houses project.

"Apparently the EMS paramedics spotted the incident and told police the direction the suspects fled," said Detective Frank Agostini, who, along with Detective Matthew Collins is handling the case. "Precinct officers and Housing police pursued them and caught up with them near the projects." He said Police Officer Peter Hoeflinger made the arrest, bringing in Gerell Haynes, 16, and a 15-year-old whose name was not released because of his age, to be questioned and charged. Both suspects live in the Breukelen complex.

"We’re still investigating any ties they have to other purse snatching," Agostini said,

Anyone with information on similar robberies is asked to call the detectives at 257-6215. All calls will be kept strictly confidential.

"If these guys are connected with other cases we want to know," said the detectives. "Too many times people are hesitant to come forward, but sometimes it’s the only way we can be sure criminals will stay off the streets."
