City Council Candidates Appear At Informed Voices Civic Meeting
This past Tuesday evening in St. Jude School’s Coyne Hall hundreds of Canarsiens turned out for a closer look at some of the candidates for the office of City Council. Hailing from the 42nd A.D. were Barbara Faison, Donald Wooton, Charles Barron and Joseph Jeffries-el. Representing the 46th AD were Rev. Raymond Rufus Blanchette, Phyllis Taliaferro, Abraham Levy, Elizabeth Atwood King and Lewis Fidler. All candidates who legally announced their intention to be a City Council candidate and filed by the Board of Elections deadline of June 18 were invited to attend the candidate’s forum. Prior to the forum, some important announcements were made by the Association’s board members. Voter registration was emphasized by Teresita Sugaste and registration forms were made available. Treasurer Fred Ihrig announced that the Internal Revenue Service had granted the Association of Informed Voices a 5013C status, officially qualifying it as a tax exempt organization eligible to receive donations and grants necessary to continue and expand programs in the community. Mr. Ihrig went on to say that the Association would pursue all avenues of funding and inform the membership of any developments Canarsiens played a "hands on" role in the formation of the questions posed to the candidates by accepting the civic association’s invitation to submit their questions to them via their hot line number or email address. In their quest to make an educated decision as to whom to give their vote, Canarsiens questioned candidate’s prior experience, their perception of the community’s problems and special needs, proposed solutions to those problems and needs and the candidates’ individual values and priorities. After describing his years of experience and summing up his position, candidate Lewis Fidler made a statement that gave voters food for thought, "Before any of us tells you what we WANT to do, you should ask us what we’ve DONE".
