Pier Fisherman Cast Off Sewage Warning

Although the city's Department of Environmental Protection distributed signs this week warning fishermen that it would be "inadvisable" to fish off Canarsie Pier through next Monday, there they are, rod and reel in hand, doing their thing. Park Service rangers posted the signs after the DEP announced the wastewater treatment plant at Starrett City was being shut down for three days for emergency repairs, resulting in "approximately 60 million gallons of sewage being discharged into Jamaica Bay."
