Police Nab Suspect In March Bergen Beach Rape

Police have made an arrest in the March 14th rape of a 17-year-old Bergen Beach resident.

According to officials at the 63rd Precinct, an apparently-homeless man was spotted on April 13th at the corner of East 66th Street and Avenue U and identified as being a man portrayed as the rapist in a flyer circulating throughout the community since the rape incident. Police this week did not confirm the name of the suspect.

The victim and a relative were summoned to the corner where the arrest took place and the girl tentatively identified the suspect.

The attacker, wearing blue jeans and a blue shirt, was at first thought to be posing as a utility worker when he accosted the girl, finally pushing his way into her house. Police said the girl was arriving at her home at about 3 p.m. when she was approached by the man, who said he had to gain access to the home and asked her to let him in. He overpowered her and dragged her into a bedroom where the rape took place, she told police.

After the attack, the man searched the house for valuables and finally fled with an undetermined amount of property.

The victim was taken to Coney Island Hospital for treatment and released.
