Ave. L Laundromat Hit By Burglars — Again!

Steel cover over sidewalk basement entrance to laundromat was torn off almost completely so burglars could enter. Owner told police that this had not been the first time burglars hit him. Charles Rogers

The owner of a laundromat on Avenue L who had his business burglarized last Thursday told the Can-arsie Courier it was the fourth time thieves had burglarized his store in the past five months.

The owner of Luxury Laundromat at 9214 Avenue L, who declined to give his name, said burglars entered through the basement after tearing off the steel doors entering the basement from the sidewalk in front of the store.

Police from the 69th Precinct said the thief or thieves pried the metal doors off their frame and when the owner came to open the store at 6 a.m. he discovered the break-in. An undetermined amount of currency and cash was taken, totaling more than $600, according to police. Apparently nothing else was stolen. No other stores on the block were burglarized.

Sergeant John Perrone of the local detective squad said the owner might have prevented the break-in if he had had certain safeguards installed after the last burglary.

"Whenever a merchant takes over a store and there are no safety or crime preventive facilities already there, we recommend that certain measures be taken. In this case, since the store was burglarized before in a similar way, I’m sure the owner could have saved the money — plus a lot of grief — if he had taken those measures."

Anyone who might have seen anything unusual or who has information is asked to call the 69th Precinct Detective Squad at (718) 257-6215. All calls will be kept confidential.
