MAN’S FOOT CUT OFF BY ‘L’ TRAIN
A Brooklyn man lost his left foot and ankle when he apparently slipped and fell onto the tracks at the Rock-away Parkway subway terminal as a Canarsie-bound ‘L’ train entered the station at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Identified by the Daily News as Winston Black, 44, the victim was rescued by firefighters, who were quickly dispatched to the scene along with police and emergency service units, about 30 minutes after the accident. He was placed in an ambulance and rushed to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for examination and treatment. He was listed in stable condition yesterday; however, a police spokesman said doctors were unable to reattach the limb due to excessive damage from the injury. A spokesman for the NYPD told the Canarsie Courier yesterday that the motorman told investigators it ap-peared the man slipped or fell as he guided the train into the station. Earlier, witnesses told authorities they believed the man had jumped in front of the incoming train. Police said de-spite initial reports, an emotionally disturbed individual jumped on the tracks. The train operator’s statement contradicted that scenario and the victim told rescuers he had fallen. The man wound up under the third car of the subway train, holding his left foot in his hand, according to a transit maintenance supervisor at the scene. "It was gruesome," said the transit employee.
