Bright Light Reveals Flaws In ‘Thief: Deadly Shadows’

QUICK PICK: Mindless arcade-style shooting action blasts its way onto home consoles with SNK’s 2-D side-scroller, “Metal Slug 3” for the Xbox. Battle Gen. Morden and his horde of heavily armed henchmen through five stages with multiple paths. Players can wield shotguns, assault rifles and grenade launchers, turn undead and spit acidic blood, and mount vehicles for additional firepower. Even though the action is hot and heavy, the game gets old pretty fast. This Teen-rated title deserves 2 1/2 stars out of four.

If you enjoy sneaking around the streets of cyberspace looking for hapless victims to rob, then "Thief: Deadly Shadows" should be right up your alley.

In the game, set in medieval times, you assume the role of legendary thief Garrett as you skulk about town trying to untangle the mysterious secrets of The City. Of course, relieving the rich townsfolk of their excessive wealth also can be a rewarding experience.

In addition to mugging urban peasants, players can loot homes, fence stolen goods and go on missions for several factions within the city. Meanwhile, how Garrett treats other people determines whether they and their friends will attack him.

Some of the tools of the trade that Garrett can use in his unruly endeavors are a lock pick, wall-climbing gloves and a variety of weapons. In addition to a dagger, a blackjack and flash bombs, several kinds of arrows are available, including fire arrows, water arrows (to extinguish torches) and poison-gas arrows.

Unfortunately, if you are discovered by anyone with a weapon, you must flee or be killed. There is no standing your ground in this game.

Also, it has been confirmed that a bug exists that reverts the difficulty level to "normal" when any saved game is loaded, even if it was on "easy" or "hard" when you started it.

Although "Thief: Deadly Sha-dows" is fun, I suggest you try it before you buy it.
