Borough President Continues Brooklyn Summer Concert Series

Brooklyn is alive with the sound of music this summer thanks to Borough President Marty Markowitz.

Linda Ronstadt kicked off the 26th Annual Seaside Concert Series last week in Brighton Beach. Four nights later, New Edition opened the 22nd year of the Martin Luther King concert series at Wingate Field.

The borough president came up with the idea for the concerts a quarter-century ago when he was a state senator. He was soon running concerts at Asser Levy Park and a Monday night concert series at Wingate Field.

The seaside concert series schedule:


Frankie Valli

July 15 - Salsa by the Sea with Jerry Rivera & Aventura;

July 22 - Dionne Warwick, Cat-skills on Broadway featuring Freddie Roman, Stewie Stone & Dick Capri;

July 29 - Classic Rock Night of Hits: Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals, Chick Negron & Dr. Hook;

Aug. 5 - The Spinners, the Tempta-tions Review featuring Dennis Edwards, the Stylistics;


The Whispers

Aug. 12 - Best of Classic Rock with a Special Mystery Star from the 1970s, plus Badfinger featuring Joey Molland, Denny Laine and Robbie DuPree;

Aug. 19 - Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, Dion, Jenny Vance and the Planotones hosted by Jay Black.

All concerts are Thursday eve-nings at 7:30 p.m. at Asser Levy Park, West Fifth St. and Surf Ave., Brighton Beach. Admission is free.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series schedule:

July 12 - New Edition with special guest;

July 19 - The Sweet Sounds of Soul, starring Stephanie Mills & Fred-die Jackson;

July 26 - WBLS-FM: United We Funk Allstars Featuring the Dazz Band, SOS Band, Confunkshun, Midnight Star & Lenny Williams;

Aug. 2 - Annual Gospel Night: Fred Hammond & Radical for Christ, Israel & the New Breed and special guest Keith "Wonderboy" Johnson;

Aug. 9 - The Carlos Lezama Carib-bean Music Carnival featuring the Mighty Sparrow Show plus winners of the 2004 Carnival of Trinidad & To-bago;

Aug. 16 - Classic Soul Night with the Whispers, the Manhattans and the Delfonics;

Aug. 23 - Lovers Night Out starring En Vogue & Silk.

Concerts are Monday evenings starting at 7:30p.m. at Wingate Field, Winthrop Street, between Brooklyn and Kingston Avenues. Admission is free.
