Chiefs One Win From Second Consecutive Playoff Berth
By Jason Medina

Playing their last regular season road game on Tuesday, the Canarsie Chiefs kept their playoff hopes alive by routing Tilden, 26-0. Canarsie sophomore Carlos Ortiz threw a two-hitter with six strikeouts before the game was called in the fifth inning because of the PSAL mercy rule. Centerfielder Ryan Sutton hit a three run home run and Junior second baseman Travis Forbes went 5 for 5 with four RBIs.

Canarsie, 7-8 in the division, is now tied for third place with Sheepshead Bay. The Chiefs final regular season game will be at home against Tilden. A Canarsie win will propel them into the post-season for the second straight year.

Going into last Friday’s game against Brooklyn Tech, the Chiefs knew they had to win their final three games win assure them an automatic playoff berth if they win their last three games of the season.

Canarsie sophomore Sutton pitched against the winless Engineers. Despite what coach Robert Nappo calls "electrifying stuff," Sutton, 0-4, has been inconsistent and was looking to record his first win of the season. He has struck out 21 batters in 14.4 innings, but has given up 24 hits and 28 walks.

His poor performance forced Nappo to drop Sutton in the rotation from number two to three starter midway through the season. Sutton threw a five-hit, eleven strike out complete game to propel Canarsie over Brooklyn Tech, 4-3.

"We made adjustments to make Sutton’s job easier when he was on the mound," said Nappo after the win. "We cut down on his slider and changeup and focused on him primarily throwing his fast ball and curves. It seemed to make him more relaxed and he showed the sort of stuff and performance he is capable of."

After a scoreless first inning, Sutton gave up three runs in the second but then settled down and retired the last 14 batters he faced. The Chiefs scratched back with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth. With the score tied at three in the bottom of the seventh, Sutton scored on an error to give Canarsie the come from behind victory and a fighting chance at the playoffs.
