Varied Speakers Highlight Civic Association Meeting

How far would you go to help a friend? Canarsie resident Margaret Rosenthal told last week’s meeting of the United Canarsie South Civic Association (UCSCA), where she was a featured speaker, about her experience as a liver donor last year. The local heroine, and now expert on liver ailments, said the delicate and serious operation was a pre-Thanksgiv-ing gift to her childhood friend last November. The special friend, Lenore Shebovsky, was the grateful recipient of sixty per cent of Rosenthal’s liver in a complicated surgery that took place at NYU Medical Center.

Shebovsky, suffering from primary billiary cirrhosis which can be fatal, fortunately shared the same blood type as Rosenthal (type B-positive), which made the fourteen-hour marathon operation possible. At the time of the surgery, only seventy-three other live liver donor operations had been done previously. Rosenthal was happy to report that both she and her friend were doing fine.

"My liver has grown back completely," she told the enthralled meeting attendees. "My permanent titanium sutures once set off an anti-shoplifting device while I was shopping, so I had to show the security guard a letter I carry with me proving that the metal inside me came from a legitimate source," said Rosenthal with tongue-in-cheek. "He didn’t care to see the abdominal scars though."

Other business at the meeting included the appearance of City Councilman Lew Fidler, who spoke of surveys that will soon be going out to local residents seeking answers to the question, "Why or why not do you shop on Ave. L?" In an effort to stimulate commercial activity on the retail strip, banners have been hung along the avenue and merchants have been taking a more active role in its merchants’ association. "I have also met with Congressman Ed Towns to ask him if he can be instrumental in perhaps securing federal dollars to help move forward the Seaview Park redevelopment initiative," said Fidler.

UCSCA President Neil Duncan told of his low-key efforts to get local politicians, including Fidler, to contribute funds towards a fence around a small community garden on Schenck Ave. The garden project was a recipient of donor funds approximately one year ago. These funds were used to build the gazebo that currently stands on the site.

The group’s vice president, Lenny Fogel, an-nounced that the Memorial Day Parade will be preceded by a 20-minute dedication ceremony at the Veterans Circle at the foot of Rockaway Parkway at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 31st.

The two hour parade will begin at 11a.m. at the American Legion Hall on East 92nd St. and Conklin Ave. Stops will be made at the Canarsie Cemetery and P.S. 115. Refreshments will be served after the parade makes a full circuit back to the Legion Hall.
