The Informed Voices Civic Association held a special award ceremony Tuesday night in St. Jude’s School auditorium, honoring resident high school students, community leaders and others for outstanding contribution to Canarsie.

Informed Voices’ Wanda Ihrig and Father Matteo Rizzo presented student awards for accomplishments such as excellent attendance, volunteer work, community service and leadership skills in various programs.

"They’ve served at Voices functions, ran parties for foster children... All the young people here this evening have the leadership skills, the talent and motivation to succeed in everything they put their mind to," said Ihrig.

Other awards included the 2004 Citizenship Award, given to activist Josephine Bolus, and the Business Partnership Award, given to Mike Loconte, owner of Jersey Lynne Farms.
