Cleaning More Effective

Inadequate brushing of your teeth allows the formation of a sticky coating of saliva, bacteria, and food deposits. If your teeth are not cleaned, this material accumulates to form a substance known as plaque which promotes tooth decay and gum disease. Once this substance has hardened, it becomes tartar and must be scaled off. At this point, no amount of tooth brushing will get rid of it. It initially forms on the tooth surface next to the gum, but eventually works its way under the gum where it creates an ideal environment for bacterial growth. Ad-ditionally, its physical presence causes irritation which in turn leads to gingivitis.

One way to check your tooth brushing technique is to use tablets, which stain hidden plaque so that you can see the areas you need to brush more effectively. The stain will also show quite clearly that plaque cannot be completely eliminated unless you supplement your brushing with flossing.
