Chiefs 2-Game Win Streak Ends With Loss To Sharks
By Jason Medina

Looking to go over .500 for the first time this season, the Canarsie Chiefs varsity baseball team sent left-handed sophomore pitcher, Ryan Sutton, to the mound last Thursday against Sheepshead Bay High School, hoping to beat the Sharks for the second straight game.

Despite being young and still learning, Canarsie head coach, Robert Nappo, believes Sutton has a bright future and the ability to be a big time pitcher. "He is a young, hard thrower with a lot of potential who just needs more experience."

In his first start of the season, Sutton faced the Midwood Hornets and showed the potential he has, when he struck out four of the first five batters he faced. However, his inexperience was evident as he lost command of the plate and allowed six earned runs, nine walks, and hit a batter in the 12-2 loss.

However, Sutton had another rough outing against Sheepshead. Despite striking out nine batters, he gave up seven earned runs, eight hits and six walks in the 9-4 loss that dropped the Chiefs’ record to 2-3. Sheepshead junior Kalif Person had a complete 12-strikeout performance. Person was also the Sharks spark plug offensively, going 3 for 4 with three runs scored. At the plate, Sutton got a two-run homer for the Chiefs first home run of the season.

Sheepshead junior first baseman Deshawn Daniel and junior second baseman Victor Jaime each had a triple and combined to drive in five runs.

Canarsie senior right fielder Kevin Fraser continued his hot hitting with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

On Tuesday, the Chiefs record dipped to 2-4 as they lost, 6-1, to host Abraham Lincoln High School. Lincoln sophomore pitcher Anthony Rodriguez had a complete game giving up one earned run on five hits and he struck out eight.
