Students, Teachers & Parents Create Huge Mural At PS 279

Some of the dozens who participated in the mural painting project were present for the recent dedication ceremony.

Public School 279 recently celebrated the completion of its "Masterpieces of America" mural, which graces an entire wall on the third floor of the East 104 Street elementary school.

A formal dedication, at which all participants signed the massive painting that took six weeks to complete, was held at the school on April 17.

The project, which depicts images of America past and present, was made possible through a Parents As Partners Grant to the school from Symphony Space, a publicly funded arts unit, which gives New York City public school students insight into the social studies curriculum through the arts and artists in the classroom and at museums. The program was designed by P.S. 279 Arts Coordinator Merryl Silver and Symphony Space representatives Madeline Cohen and teaching artist Kellyann Monaghan.

Silver recently told the Canarsie Courier that the project, with administrative support from Interim Acting Principal Dr. Lena Richardson and assistant principals Maryanne Wasmuth and Winnie Bracco, began following a trip to the Brooklyn Museum of Art where parents and students toured the American Identity Exhibit and drew sketches from the paintings they saw that inspired them. The sketches were later reproduced on a wall at the school, which eventually was turned into the mural painted by students, parents and teachers.

Deon Forder (left) and Sirron Ellis are two of many students who helped create the mural. Parent Charmane Brown (right photo) puts finishing touches on mural.

Silver said, "The mural serves as a testimony to those artists, past and present, who documented the changes in our country through visual expression, as well as the students and parents who dedicated their time and energy to create a long lasting impression to be enjoyed for many years to come."
