Moscow Circus To Debut In Brooklyn Next Week

Having just completed tours of Alaska, the Hawaiian Islands and over 100 venues on the East Coast, The Stars of the Moscow State Circus will, for the first time, bring its highly acclaimed circus to Brooklyn at the Millenium Theater in Brighton Beach from May 4-9, for 13 exciting shows.

Far from traditional circuses this 120-minute, "new age" circus of the future, animal free — people entertain-ing people — features some of the most amazing spectacles ever seen in the center ring, including acrobats, clowns, amazing aerialists performing on the Russian Swing and trapeze artistes performing high above the circus floor. Centered on circus artists from the World Famous Moscow State Circuses, a 200-year heritage and tradition, these world-class artists and per-formances developed from massive governmental support of State Circus schools. At its height, before the collapse of the Communist regime, there were 70 permanent circus buildings and over 50 traveling circuses. Family dynasties such as the Durovs, Zapash-nys, Kios, Kantermirovs and others grew and passed on their skills from one generation to the next.

With prestige and celebrity status on par with the ballet and opera, the Circus under the Communist regime developed a quality and expertise on a scale unknown in the rest of the world. It set the standard by which to judge all artists and performances and became a highly successful cultural export, sought throughout the world. With the fall of Communism and the ease of travel and open borders, the talent, skills and performances that grew from this massive cultural organization can now be conveniently seen and all can enjoy the glory of this part of Russia’s im-pressive cultural heritage.

Featured on this tour are second and third generation performers, many graduates of the Moscow Circus Col-lege, headliners from the International Circus Festivals in Rome and Monte Carlo, performers who have toured throughout the world and combined have hundreds of years of experience in the Circus. Never before has such a collection of Russian Stars been as-sembled under the Big Top.
