Star-Studded Lineup Set For Music Awards Show

Reggae messenger Luciano; premier dancehall star Vybz Cartel; lovers and gospel-oriented singer Sanchez; raga/ soca superstar Bunji Garlin and calypso queen Calypso Rose are among the star-studded lineup for the 23rd An-nual International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) which will be held on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 9, at the prestigious Columbia Univer-sity- Alfred Lerner Hall, 115th Street and Broadway, in New York City. Other performers include: Half Pint, Richie Stephens, DYCR, Mickey General, Sou-kous Stars, Hai Rezolution, Dean Fraser, along with Derrick Barnett and the All Star Band, and a host of top Int’l reggae stars, as surprise performers.

The highflying dancehall DJ Sean Paul grabs eleven nominations to top the list of nominees in this year’s Mar-tin’s Inter-Culture, 23rd Annual Inter-national Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA). Last year he captured three of the statues at the 22nd IRAWMA.

The International Reggae and World Music Awards, produced by Martin’s Inter-Culture, annually honors the best in reggae and world beat music at the global level. The experts in the reggae and world music industry recently sub-mitted their nominations for the best in some thirty-eight categories.

Two new categories were added to the Awards this year, they are Best Reggaeton Entertainer and Best Hip Hop Entertainer, while the category for Leading Newspaper/Magazine has been discontinued. The Hip Hop nominees are: Busta Rhymes, 50 Cents, Fabulous, Black Eye Peas and Outkast, while the Reggaeton nominees are: Noreaga, Tego Calderon, Wisin Y Yandel, Queen Ivy and Daddy Yankee.

This year’s International Reggae and World Music Hall of Fame/Lifetime inductees are: VP Records, that is now celebrating its 25th Anniversary, and Saxophonist Dean Fraser. The Marcus Garvey Humanitarian Award will be given to the legendary Harry Belafonte and Rapper Wyclef Jean.

Martin’s Inter-Culture Award of Hon-or will be awarded to Singer Sanchez, Radio Personalities Jeff Barnes and Bobby Konders. The Producer’s "Res-pect" Award will be bestowed on Ca-lypso Rose the Queen of Calypso; the Community Service Award will be presented to Shaggy, Richie Stephens and Vincent HoSang - Royal Carib-bean Bakery (Caribbean Food Delights).

Nominees for the Best Calypso/ Soca Entertainer are: Bunji Garlin, Iwer George, Kelvin Lyttle, Fay Ann Lyons and Rupee. Best African Entertainer the nominees are: Oumou Sangare, Yous-sou N’Dour, Angelique Kidjo, Lucky Dube and Alpha Blondy. Best Compas/ Racine nominees are: Tabou Combo, L ‘Orchestra Tropicana d’ Haiti, T-Vice, Zin and Sweet Mickey, and for the Best Latin Entertainer the nominees are: Luis Miguel, Enrique Iglesias, Mana, Santana and Jennifer Lopez.

Actor/Comedian Carl Wright, aka Checker Fred, from Barbershop 1 & 2, TV host Miss Twinz, Irie Jam’s DJ Roy and Dub Master, along with a surprise host, will host the ceremonies.

Other leading nominees are: Sizzla and Elephant Man (6 each), Beenie Man (5), Luciana, Buju Banton and Wayne Wonder (4 each). Sanchez, Burning Spear, Morgan Heritage and Beres Hammond (3 each). Other nominees include: Shaggy, Sly and Robbie, UB-40, Peter Gabriel, Lucky Dube, Yellowman, Grace Thrillers, Half Pint, Frankie Paul, Tony Green, Malachi, Mutabaruka, Mr. Lex, DYCR, Capleton, Anthony B., Turbulance, Anthony Cruz, Sanchez, T.O.K., Burning Spear, Vybz Cartel, Warror King, Tony Rebel, Marcia Griffiths, Cecille, Tanya Step-hens, Sasha, Ms. Thing, Calypso Rose, Lady Saw, Sister Carol, Papa San and many others.
