Chiefs Rebounds After Two Road Losses To Midwood The Canarsie High School boys varsity baseball team opened up the PSAL season on the road in a two-game series against the Midwood Hornets, who have defeated the Chiefs in their last four games by a combined score of 43-14. Unfortunately, history repeated itself, as Midwood continued its dominance over Canarsie in a 4-3 opening day thriller last Thursday, then topped them again, 12-2, last Friday. But the Chiefs rebounded on Monday, notching their first win of the season, out slugging FDR High School, 12-5. They evened their season record at 2-2 after defeating Sheepshead Bay High School, 9-8, on Tuesday. Game one at Midwood was an uphill battle from the start. After retiring Canarsie in order in the first, Midwood scored two runs in the bottom of the inning on a couple of timely two out hits by senior first baseman Jeffrey Hoinacki, and catcher Adam Katz. The Hornets extended the lead to 3-0, on a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman, Andrew Gitto. Midwood starting pitcher, Robert Fleisher, dominated the Chiefs the first five innings allowing just one hit. "He’s a Tom Glavine-type pitcher," said coach Bobby Nappo of the Midwood junior. "He kept us off balance by rarely coming inside and throwing a lot of off speed stuff and staying on the outer half of the plate." In the sixth, the Chiefs scored two runs to cut the lead to 3-2. But, in the bottom of the inning, Midwood scored a run on a hit by senior center fielder Chris Collazo. In their last at bat, Canarsie attempted a comeback. With one out, the Chiefs loaded the bases then third baseman Orlando Colon hit into a force play that scored a run and put the Chiefs within one of tying the score. But with the tying run just 90 feet away, freshman Ty-Shau Watson struck out on a 3-2 count to end the game. In the beginning of the second game, hard throwing lefthander Ryan Sutton looked as if he would be the star of the game. In the top of the first Sutton and right fielder Kevin Fraser got RBI singles to put the Chiefs up 2-0. Sutton then took the hill and struck out four of the first five Hornet batters. But with two outs in the second, Sutton suddenly lost command of the strike zone. Midwood took advantage scoring three runs. The Hornets kept pouring it on, scoring two in the forth and exploding with seven in the fifth. Canarsie had an impressive 18-hit attack against FDR, led by freshman left fielder Yusef Johnson, who went 5 for 5 with three doubles and two RBI’s. Fraser, a senior, is off to a fast start batting .727 (8 for11), went 4 for 5 on Monday with three RBI’s, two runs scored and a stolen base. Watson also had three RBI’s, plus three hits with two runs scored. The Chiefs got a solid pitching performance from junior Quindel Vickers, who pitched a complete game. Despite giving up four runs in the first inning, Vickers settled down and only gave up one run on five hits the rest of the game. "This was the first game where we put it all together," said Nappo after the win. "We got a good pitching performance, hit very well, and played well in the field, making some good defensive plays capped off by Travis Ford who ended the game on a diving catch in the outfield"
