By Merle Exit

Despite some sloppy play by both teams, the New York Sharks women’s tackle football team upped their record to 2-0 and notched their first shutout of the season last Saturday in a 26-0 romp over the visiting New Hampshire Freedom.

After the opening kickoff in Queens, the Sharks started from the New Hampshire 6-yard line. Follow-ing a quick sideline pass from QB Val Halesworth, Kathy Holloman ran the ball for a 94-yard touchdown. Jenny Graf licked the extra point and the score was 7-0 after just 36 seconds into the game.

The Freedom, who obtained 1,000-yard rusher Katia Pashkevitch in the off season, figured that her running ability would get them on the scoreboard, but the Sharks’ defense limited her to short runs until late in the game.

With Sharks Chrissy Hilla and Monica Marsh backing the lineup, the New York defense kept New Hampshire at bay. However, the offense was less than spectacular allowing four sacks on Halesworth.

The Sharks defense sacked Freedom QB Stacey Blodgett several times in the second quarter, but there was no scoring.

New York’s offense was sparked
in the second half when Missy Marmorale really got into gear. With New Hampshire just inside Sharks’ territory, Blodgett threw a pass that was intercepted by Marmorale, who ran it for a 63-yard touchdown. Graf kicked the extra point, and the Sharks led 14-0 lead with halfway through the third quarter.

The Sharks next score came after some fine defensive play. New York pushed New Hampshire back to its 3-yard line then blocked the Freedom’s punt attempt.

With the ball on New Hampshire’s 3-yard line, Halesworth ran the ball in for a 20-0 lead early in the fourth quarter. There was a bad on the extra point attempt.

A third quarterback sack by Rose Addison forced the Freedom to punt. Marmorale blocked the kick. Courtney Eaton recovered the ball on the Freedom 18-yard line.

On the next play, Halesworth found wide receiver Karen Mulligan who ran it in for the Sharks fourth TD of the game. Another bad snap left the score at 26-0with over ten minutes remaining in the game.

The Sharks host the Montreal
Blitz at August Martin High School this Saturday at 3 p.m. For tickets
