‘MTX Mototrax’ Takes
• Cost: $29.99 • Violence Rating: Everyone (age 6 and older) • Review Rating: By Jeb Haught Copley News Service Virtual thrill-seekers can experience high-flying adventure from the safety and comfort of home with Activision’s new off-road motorcycle game, "MTX Mototrax." Several modes of play are available, such as the in-depth Career mode, Freestyle and even online play with up to seven competitors. If participants get tired of racing, they can enter Free Ride and explore the landscape. This mode is set up like the Tony Hawk series in that riders can approach certain characters and obtain mini-mission challenges, such as riding a wheelie around a building or chasing down a pickpocket. More than 100 death-defying maneuvers are available, and most of them can be linked. However, a player starts off with only a few tricks and must earn the rest. This cyber-dirt-spewing game can be customized in a number of ways, from the rider’s appearance (face, hair, jersey, boots) to the type of sponsor. There’s even a track editor that lets players create custom racetracks. Regrettably, the physics system seems off-kilter, which affects every mode you play. It’s not nearly as realistic as that of the recently released "MX Unleashed." All in all, "MTX Mototrax" is an enjoyable ride with a cool online mode, but it feels too much like Tony Hawk strapped to a 250cc engine.
