Maimonides Center Treats Pelvic Disorders
It is estimated that more than 13 million women suffer from pelvic floor and related disorders, which result in such debilitating dysfunctions as incontinence, constipation, pain and trauma. Out of fear of embarrassment, many women compound the problem by opting to suffer silently with their condition. In 2003, Maimonides Medical Cen-ter established the first and only center in Brooklyn devoted exclusively to the evaluation, diagnosis, testing and treat-ment of rectal and pelvic floor disorders. A high-quality, compassionate and confidential medical practice, the center provides women with a wide range of treatment options designed to help them overcome their problems and to once again lead happy and productive lives. To accomplish its mission, Maimon-ides assembled a noted team of ex-perts in urogynecology, urology and gynecology, as well as colorectal and reconstructive pelvic surgery. The team utilizes a multidisciplinary ap-proach and a treatment philosophy that places the patient at the center of an individually tailored care plan. The team of board certified physicians is led by Brooke Gurland, MD, Gil Levy, MD, and Marian Fleischer, MD. "Quality of life problems, such as incontinence, are issues that fortunately are treatable and often curable," said Dr. Levy, director of urogynecology services at Maimonides. "Many women postpone seeking help because they are embarrassed or fear they will require extensive surgery."
Doctors begin with a thorough evaluation using state-of-the-art technology to determine the best treatment options available. The center’s ap-proach gives women a range of nonsurgical therapies, such as medications, that can calm an overactive bladder, hormone therapy, biofeedback, dietary changes and physical therapy exer-cises. "Maimonides also offers the latest in minimally invasive surgical techniques," noted Dr. Gurland. "Procedures that once required days or even weeks of recovery time can now be completed on an outpatient basis, with little or no discomfort to the patient." As a team, Dr. Gurland and Dr. Levy collaborate to perform pelvic reconstructive surgery. "Our team approach means that pa-tients get the best care possible, using the skills and experience that our doctors have," said Dr. Fleischer, who also performs endoscopic and laser procedures. Treating pelvic floor disorders in a compassionate and confidential fashion is a priority at Maimonides Me-dical Center. "Women do not have to suffer in silence, and we are here to help," Dr. Gurland said.
