QUESTION: City health officials issued a report claiming the city is healthier and businesses have not suffered as a result of the smoking ban that went into effect a year ago in restaurants and bars. Do you agree or disagree that the tobacco restriction was a good idea?

“I agree. Yes, it’s working. People, number one, have become more health conscious. They are learning that second hand smoke can do harm to themselves and to others.” Sylvia Whiteside, Canarsie

“Actually, I think it’s right to ban smoking from restaurants and bars. I know a friend. She had cancer. She got it from smoking. And it’s really nasty to have someone blow second hand smoke in your face.” Terry Shortte, Canarsie

“I think it’s a bad idea because a lot of businesses are losing money. Some popular restaurants like the ones I know about in Sheepshead Bay are losing money. People want to sit down and have a smoke after a meal.” Eugene Morgan, East New York
