MEET YOUR SPIRITUAL LEADER
In order to give appropriate recognition to the spiritual leaders Rev. John Amann Pastor, Holy Family Church By Raymond E. Dowd Father John J. Amann, Pastor of Holy Family Church has been serving the parishioners of the Brooklyn and Queens Roman Catholic communities as a parish priest and a pastor for over 35 years. Born on March 2, 1940, in Jamaica Queens, Father Amann was ordained shortly after his 20th birthday after attending St. Mary’s Semi-nary in Maryland. For the next 32 years Fr. Amann served the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens in such parishes as St. Ber-nard in Bergen Beach, St. Bonna-venture, St. Rose of Lima, St. Fidelis, St. Guitrude and St. Catherine of Sienna in St. Albans, Queens, from 1990 until coming to Holy Family two years ago. "It’s good to be back in Brooklyn," said Fr. Amann, about his return to the local church at 9719 Flatlands Avenue. "Providing for all the needs of all the cultures in the Canarsie area is a challenge. But the people of Holy Family have come together and have worked together in the spirit of Unity," said Fr. Amann. "Holy Family is a great mix of cultures, a great working together of cultures." "The parish has a good young congregation," says. Fr. Amann. "Seeing the youth in the church is very inspiring, a parish needs youth in order to have growth and Holy Family has seen the youth of the community take a great interest in it’s faith." The Holy Family Parish School is very strong with over 375 children learning the 3R’s as well as continuing to learn the teachings of the Roman Catholic Faith. The teaching staff in the school has been with the parish for a long period of time, including the principal, Miss Mary Lou Reitz, who has been with Holy Family since 1990. Additionally, the CCD program is doing an excellent job of teaching those in the public school. Fr. Amann believes that Holy Family with its "tremendous support staff, parishioners, and parish priests has a great future ahead." He added, "The community is supportive of the church and each other, and together they have made Holy Family parish truly the family it is today."
