Informed Voices Civic Assn. Creates Health and Safety Program By D. Rybstein At the recent monthly meeting of Canarsie’s Informed Voices Civic Association (IVCA), held at the St. Jude Church auditorium, executives of the umbrella Association of Informed Voices (AIV), a non-profit unit that runs various neighborhood social service programs, announced that it was forming the Informed Voices Community, Health, Safety, and Security Council. Father Matteo Rizzo, who serves as president of both the association and the civic group, began the meeting by praising the efforts of Wanda Ihrig, an Informed Voices board member, stating, "She has worked hard over the years on health and safety issues. It is a large part of what we do. There is a big announcement coming about a new program and it’s only right for the person who brought it to fruition to make it." "This council will educate and assist the community in the following areas: public health, disaster relief, and emergency preparedness," said Ihrig. "We are putting together a group of doctors, nurses, nutritionists, members of the Health and Hospitals Corporation, Hospital liaisons, the NYC Dept. of Health, office of emergency management, the police and fire departments, the Brooklyn D.A.’s office, elected officials, and utility companies in an effort to have a comprehensive way in dealing with concerns that until now were taken for granted. Our motto is ‘Don’t be scared, be prepared.’" Ihrig spoke of taking this effort to the next level in the near future by applying for available grants that cover training and relief efforts. "The N.Y.C. Health Dept. has suggested to us that we apply for Citizen Emergency Response Training (CERT) available from FEMA," she said.
