Testing Encouraged On Lupus Alert On April Fool’s Day Don’t be fooled by lupus this April Fool’s Day. While lupus acts as if everyday were April Fool’s Day, April 1 has been designated as Lupus Alert Day — a day when all Americans, particularly women between the ages of 15 and 44, are encouraged to participate in a Lupus Self-Screening Test. Between 1,4000,00 and 2,000,000 Americans, mostly women, suffer from lupus, a disease where the immune system, for unknown reasons, becomes hyperactive and attacks normal tissue. Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that often evades patients, family members, doctors and researchers. • Patients — Symptoms often are ignored because they mimic less serious illnesses and there are periods when symptoms are not noticeable. • Family Members—Victims are branded hypochondriacs because they don’t look sick. • Doctors — There’s no definitive test for lupus that can determine if a patient has lupus. • Researchers — Scientists don’t fully understand exactly what causes lupus. A cure remains elusive. Since symptoms of lupus mimic other less serious illnesses, patients often are fooled into dismissing the warning signs — all the while serious organ damage is occurring. For a free copy of the Lupus Self-Screening Test, and a brochure about the disease call the Lupus Alliance of America, Inc., Long Island/Queens Affiliate at 1-800-850-9000.
