Views On Gary S. Rafal, D.D.S. Tooth Calendar When a baby is born, there is a mouthful of 52 teeth buried in the gums. Although they are not fully formed, the 20 "baby" teeth are well under way, including enamel coating. There is barely enough room for the upcoming 20 baby teeth, and no room for the adult set of 32. The first two teeth to emerge are the lower incisors (front teeth) at six months. Within a month, the lateral incisors usually appear on the bottom, alongside. The upper front teeth usually come into the mouth at about seven and half months, followed by the upper lateral incisors (like bookends) at nine months. The first molars erupt before the canines (or eye teeth), leaving a space between the front teeth and the molars. The lower first molars come in at one year and the uppers two months later. The canines come in at eighteen months and second molars make their appearance at about the 24th month. Between age 2 & 3 the child should have a full set of 20 primary teeth.
