Radical Changes To Local Bus Routes Being Studied Community Board 18 District Manager Dorothy Turano revealed a number of proposals being considered for changes in city bus routes affecting the community. Studies for these modifications are expected to take several months, therefore, Turano assured this week, no changes will take place "anytime soon." Citing a recent South Brooklyn Transportation Survey (SBTS), Turano told of radical changes proposed for New York City Transit’s Department of Buses routes B-6 and B-42, and the Command Bus Company’s route B-103, all of which serve Canarsie. "Planners are looking at re-routing the B-6 to Ave. L," said Turano. (The B-6 travels along Flatlands Avenue for the Canarsie portion of its route.) "The change is part of the effort to improve the Avenue L shopping district," she said. Merchants along the street and legislators have long sought ways of reviving commercial activity on Avenue L from Remsen Ave. on the west to East 98 St. on the east. "They are proposing that the B-42, which currently travels on Rockaway Parkway between the subway terminal and Canarsie Pier, be branched off along Seaview Avenue to Seaview Estates," said Turano. "The proposal for the B-103 is to extend it to the new Gateway Center Mall," she said. The B-103, operated by Command Bus from its depot in Spring Creek, could be modified to route it onto Fountain Avenue and Gateway Drive, enabling it to serve the mall, which is currently more accessible for private automobiles than public transportation. Turano then cited Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s recent proposal for the city to take over private city bus lines, such as the Command and the Green Line Bus Co. as a "sticking point for the B103 extension. "Apparently, private bus lines no longer have the incentive (or money) to provide extended service on their lines," she said. Turano told of a rumored split in the B-42 route, whereby service would be extended to the underserved Seaview Estates. "Those residents have quite a long walk to Rockaway Parkway to get the bus to the ‘L’ train," said Turano. Councilman Lew Fidler reported that the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation has finally scheduled the long-awaited meeting to detail proposals concerning the renovation of Canarsie Park. The meeting will be held at St. Jude’s Church on April 19.
