Experience Sound, Fury Of Vietnam With ‘Vietcong: Purple Haze’
• System: Windows 98 and above • Violence Rating: Teen (age 13 and older) • Review Rating: By Jeb Haught In "Vietcong: Purple Haze," players journey back to 1967 and command a squad of U.S. Special Forces soldiers through harrowing conflicts in the dense jungles of Vietnam. This action-packed title contains both the original Vietcong game as well as its first expansion pack, "Fist Alpha," in one package. But don’t let the low price fool you into thinking this is just another run-of-the-mill first-person shooter. As Sgt. 1st Class Steve Hawkins, you command a small squad of soldiers, each of whom has special skills. For starters, the medic can be called upon to heal you and other teammates at any time, even during hectic gunfights. In addition, your heavy-weapons specialist can lay down powerful suppressive fire, while the engineer uses demolitions and the radio man calls for artillery support. Perhaps the most important soldier in your group is the scout, or point man. He’s the guy who detects the enemy and uncovers deadly punji-stick traps. Without him, you wouldn’t know where to go since the game’s map is best used to call for artillery rather than to determine which path to take. The dense jungles of Vietnam are re-created beautifully in this game, with excellent ambient sound effects to add to the atmosphere. As a result, it’s very difficult to spot enemy soldiers in the thick foliage, especially when they dive for cover behind trees and bushes. While Vietcong is fun to play, I would like to have more control over my teammates, such as being able to place them in certain areas to set up crossfires. If you don’t mind this minor gripe, along with the mediocre multiplayer mode, then it’s time for you to enlist in the virtual army of "Vietcong: Purple Haze."
