RESOLUTIONS

OR REPENTANCE?

The New Year is a time for resolutions; resolutions to eat less, stop smoking, quell anger, make more money, get better grades, etc., etc. But why so many New Year’s resolutions fall by the wayside unfulfilled? Let’s face it, New Year’s resolutions are a human endeavor. The first day of a new year gives no more strength to accomplish the resolve than any other day of the year. Generally speaking, help is needed to accomplish change. So there are hundreds of programs which offer help to people who want to eat less, stop smoking, and get ahead. Now we learn two things from all this. First, a lot of people ac-knowledge the need for change in their lives. Second, there is massive understanding for the need of help to change. The teachings of the Bible give us direction. When the Bible speaks of change, it never speaks of making resolutions. The Bible speaks of repentance. The word repentance means a change of mind, a change in thinking. This change in thinking is not something a person does on his or her own. Real repentance is a gift of God. It is God opening the heart and mind (Acts 16:14) and granting the ability to around and act differently (Acts 11:18). So if you think you need help in turning around, you are right. You need help from God. God needs to change your thinking! God needs to change you on the inside. It really is the best for you if God brings you into line with his thinking. As He promised,"I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes" (Ezekiel 36:27). Do you think you need change? Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit. Ask for the gift of "repentance without regret, leading to salvation" (2 Corinthians 7:10)
