Lady Chiefs Extend PSAL Hoops Win Streak To Four
By Eric Goodman

The Canarsie High School varsity girls basketball team extended their winning streak to four games and improved overall to 5-3 in PSAL Brooklyn Division 1-A.

Canarsie used its size to dominate Brooklyn’s Banneker High School in the paint on the way to a 57-49 crossover-division victory at Banneker on December 15.

The Lady Chiefs scored first and never
relinquished the lead. Senior center Whitney Hollis played a tremendous game in the low post and led the Chiefs with 28 points, 20 rebounds and four blocked shots. Freshman forward Wykeemia Gray also took advantage of the smaller Banneker lineup as she added 11 points and 15 boards.

"It is obvious that our size was the key to victory today," said Lady Chiefs’ head coach Michelle Goodman. "I’m glad that the team finally realized that we can win a lot of games by getting our big girls involved."

The team continued their solid play on December 17 at home against Brooklyn’s Robeson High School. The Lady Chiefs won, 57-37, despite leading by only two points to open the second half.

The surge was largely due to Gray, who scored
14 of her game-high 18 points in the second half. Gray actually played center for most of the second half, as Hollis’ time was limited because of foul trouble. Sophomore guard Shanai Norman came off the bench and scored eight points while dishing
five assists.

"We moved the ball real well today and made the extra pass that we haven’t been making
all season. I was happy with the girls today because they finally played a solid team game," Goodman said.

Last Sunday, Hunter College hosted the non-league Winter Classic game as the Lady Chiefs faced highly-touted Manhattan Center High School. Although many PSAL insiders consider Manhattan Center to be one of the top teams in the city, Canarsie had an impressive game with a 61-49 victory.

Canarsie balanced its scoring with three
players in double digits. Gray led the Lady Chiefs with 16 points while sophomore guards Sharee Vielot and Shanai Norman each added 10 points.

"This win was very important because, even though it was a non-league game, we should get the edge over Manhattan Center as
far as playoff seeding goes," said Goodman. "Whether or not we will be considered for the playoffs, remains to be seen but it’s comforting knowing that we beat one of the top teams
in the city."
