President Neil Duncan and Vice-President Lenny Fogel of the United Canarsie South Civic Association (UCSCA) introduced a number of new members to attendees at its monthly meeting on July 8 at the Hebrew Educational Society auditorium on East 95th Street.

An obviously proud Duncan noted, "Our new members join our 350 member-strong organization which exists for the betterment of the community in which we live and work." Individual members of this rookie group have been living in southern Canarsie for between two months and six years. They cited the following reasons amongst many for having chosen Canarsie as their neighborhood: access to transportation, shopping, and highways; a waterfront community on Jamaica Bay; and affordable home prices.

Duncan and Fogel delved into local issues affecting the community, heavily emphasizing the use of the new 311 non-emergency phone system to report problems. Garbage dumping, loud music at night, and barbequing in the parks (which is forbidden) were noted as the primary reasons for residential complaints during the summer.

Soon to be relaxed alternate side-of-the-street parking regulations brought welcome sighs of relief to the audience. It was mentioned that the Dept. of Traffic will be reducing from three to one-and-a-half hours the period of time allotted for street sweeping. Shortly, signs in the neighborhood would reflect an 11:30 am to 1:00 pm period rather than the old 11:00 am to 2:00 pm time slot.

New York City Councilman Lew Fidler reported on the latest improvements for Canarsie in the city’s budget maelstrom.

"Due to budget restorations, libra-ries and the Prospect Park Zoo will not be hit as hard as previously scheduled, and each Canarsie public school will get much-needed funding for one capital improvement project," said Fidler. $2.350 million has been slated for improvements to Seaview Park covering items such as clean-up of the compost site and bike paths. Canarsie residents will be sought out to hear their ideas for the park.

A national "Night Out" was an-nounced for August 5 to be held at the intersection of Foster Ave. and Rockaway Parkway at the new P.S 66. The Carnival atmosphere will include hot dogs, rides for the kids, games, and ice cream.
