The New York City Department for the Aging’s "A Complete Guide To Health Care Coverage For Older New Yorkers" 2002 edition, is now available. Developed by the Department’s Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP), it is an indispensable tool for any older person who must decide on a health care plan.

"Proper health care coverage is important for everyone — especially seniors. As health care options continue to change, choosing a plan that works is often complicated and leaves you thinking that you need to take a college course or two to get it right," said the Department’s Commissioner, Edwin Mendez-Santiago. "This Guide is a valuable tool that can help seniors pick the plan that fits them best."

The 41-page 2002 edition covers various public and private insurance programs, offers information about long-term care planning and insurance, transfers, community spouse protection, and prescription drug insurance. Frequently asked questions are answered in clear, easy-to-read language while graphs and charts offer detailed comparisons of the health insurance plans available to older New Yorkers.

Seniors who are confused by the technical maze of health insurance matters, can get help through HIICAP counseling services. Specially trained older HIICAP volunteers are ready to answer questions and help solve problems. To find a nearby HIICAP location, call 212-4421000 during business hours; the HIICAP Hotline specialists—call 212-333-5511—can also answer questions.
