Fidler Gets Education Money Restored To Capital Budget City Councilman Lew Fidler has successfully restored $2.35 million to the budget for schools capital projects throughout his district. While Fidler’s Council District represents just 2 percent of New York City, the Councilman managed to obtain 7 percent of the amounts restored to the city’s capital budget for education. Fidler’s positions as Chairperson of the Brooklyn Delegation and as a member of the Finance Committee were integral in his obtaining a full 7% of a pot that was divided 51 ways among all the Council Districts. One of the biggest winners of the fiscal victory is PS 277 on Gerristen Avenue. Fidler restored over $300,000 to go to the Gerritsen Beach elementary school for air conditioning, an upgrade that was promised but not delivered for many years. Fidler restored money for computer lab network system upgrades at Public Schools 276 and 279 in the Canarsie/East Flabush school district, as well as PS 346 in Starrett City. The councilman also restored close to one million dollars in computer lab and laptop monies for fourteen schools throughout School District 22. Some schools that will see computer dollars include PS 236 and IS 78 in Mill Basin, PS 312 in Bergen Beach, PS 277 in Gerritsen Beach, PS 194 in Sheepshead Bay, PS 203 and PS 251 in Flatlands, and Public schools 207 and 222 and IS 278 in Marine Park. Public schools 222 and 312 will see upgrades to the network systems in their computer labs. The councilman also prevailed in his fight to go ahead with the library expansions, including full media center upgrades, for IS 78 and for District 18’s PS 115. Fidler made sure that our children’s safety wouldn’t fall sacrifice to budget cuts, restoring a new security system for PS 203 as well as a new set of safety stairs and fencing for Canarsie’s PS 272. Other projects saved from the chopping block include the building of increased classroom space for IS 211.
