Carjacker Misses Lexus, Gets A Toyota
By Charles Rogers

An East 85th Street resident can be grateful he ran the other way when a gun-toting carjacker tried to take his 2001 Lexus from him last Thursday night. At the same time, his neighbor can blame bad luck and being in the wrong place at the wrong time because the carjacker then pointed his gun at the second man and took his 2001 Toyota. No one was injured, police said.

According to a report filed at the 69th Precinct, the incident happened on May 30 at about 11:20 p.m.. Police Officers Frank Gonzalez and Michael Schmidt, who had been patrolling the area, responded to a call of a robbery in progress near East 85th Street and Seaview Avenue. When they arrived, they were approached by the 25-year-old Lexus owner who told them that, just after parking his car, a man approached him with a black handgun and told him to give him his keys. The victim, whose name was not released, turned and ran towards his residence on East 85th Street but stopped and threw his keys at the assailant when he fired one shot. The keys fell to the ground and the gun-wielder told the victim to look for them.

Meanwhile, the victim’s neighbor arrived in his Toyota Sequoia and started to park when the car-jacker aproached him and told him to get out of his car. He then got into the Toyota and fled east on Seaview Avenue.

Although police arrived within minutes and a description of the car was broadcast, the thief got away. The area was canvassed and neighborhood witnesses were interrogated. The perpetrator was described only as a male black, about 25 years old.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call the 69th Precinct Detective Squad at 257-6215. All calls will be kept confidential.
