Botanic Garden Kicks Off The Brooklyn Botanic Garden, along with Borough President Marty Markowitz, announced the kickoff for the annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest. First held eight years ago, the contest has blossomed into a spirited competition among Brooklynites committed to cleaning, greening and beautifying their communities. Since last year’s addition of the Greenest Business Block, local business improvement districts, development corporations, business and retail corridors are encouraged to get involved like their residential neighbors. The contest that transforms urban landscapes into lush colorful city gardens has spread beyond Brooklyn neighborhoods to Brooklyn businesses, and the first ten commercial entries are promised free barrel planters filled with beautiful, drought- tolerant plants. Any block primarily occupied by businesses is eligible to compete for the top honor, along with a first-prize check of $250. The business component of the contest was newly established during last year’s competition, in cooperation with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, and with continuing support from Independence Community Foundation. Residential and commercial contest winners will be selected by a panel of judges organized by the Garden. The judges will visit the residential neighborhoods and commercial districts throughout the borough, after the June 17 deadline. Judging will continue through July, and winners will be announced in early August. For both the residential and commercial blocks, judges will look for color and total visual effect, block participation, variety of plants, soil condition and gardening practices.
