So shoot me! I walked out on "About a Boy." I was just plain bored. Bored with Hugh Grant’s same facial expressions, bored with a child actor who seemed to be saying "Lookit me. I’m acting!", bored with unattractive women, and I didn’t care what happened to any of them. But, please. Don’t take my word for it. Go see for yourselves.

"Spider-Man" continues to weave its wondrous web. From his take, Tobey Maguire bought himself a spread in the Hollywood Hills, and what a wondrous web that is. Set in many, many acres, it has three bedrooms, three baths, a pool, a spa, a private gym and views from downtown to the ocean. It’s within a gated community, and the price was $3.8 million. His neighbors are the likes of the Brad Pitts, Drew Barrymore and many more familiar faces. ... Further on "Spider-Man," there’s now a novelization of the film in the bookstalls. Written by Peter David (Del Rey Books), it’s based on the screenplay by Stan Lee and David Bitko.

Reese Witherspoon Phillippe isn’t the only member of the family whose star is rising fast. Husband Ryan will star in "The I Inside," a thriller about a man who discovers, after a near-death experience, that he has the power to travel back in time. This aiding him in finding his brother’s murderer. It films in Britain.

Many years ago the Charlie Chan movies were a must-see. With actor Warner Oland playing the wise Chinese detective, they were big box-office draws. Now Lucy Liu (one of "Charlie’s Angels" pictured above) has latched on to reviving the idea and playing the granddaughter of the great Charlie Chan. Her name would be Charlie, and she will make it hep and up to date. Sounds like a winner.

And speaking of the olden days, the place to be seen, and to see, and to wine and dine was the Brown Derby Restaurant on Vine Street in Hollywood between Sunset and Hollywood boulevards. Unfortunately, it closed after both Bob Cobb, the owner, and his wife, Sally, died. But recently it was brought to life again when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the Oscar givers) had a big party celebrating the legendary watering hole. Pictures of the Derby hung on the walls. Derby dishes, such as the Cobb salad and grapefruit cake, were served, all the waiters who are still with us were there, and all the Hollywood legends were invited. Among those enjoying the fun and frolic were Rosemarie, Tab Hunter, Lizabeth Scott, Jane Withers, Janis Paige and Doris Roberts. I’m sure there were others I didn’t see, but those I did see really looked great.

BITS ‘N’ PIECES: Yup. That was Jay Leno at a stoplight on Sunset behind the wheel of one of his collector cars. Who could mistake that chin? ... Sylvester Stallone, Thandie Newton and Gabriel Byrne on the streets of L.A. filming "Shade," about poker hustlers who work the clubs and martini bars. ... Word is Russell Crowe is looking to buy a vineyard. He already owns a sprawling ranch Down Under and several houses here and there. ... Good news for sci-fi fans — more Star Wars. Episode III is set to hit the theaters in 2005. ... Lotta print stories and TV specials on film and TV mothers seem to forget that Gloria Henry was mighty good as the mother of Dennis the Menace for many years. ... Aside to Meryl P. of Pascagoula, Miss. No. Her real name is not Joan Rivers. She was born in Brooklyn, and her name was Joan Alexandra Molinsky.
