Where can children, teens and parents go to find the perfect book for summer reading or links to educational Web sites and interactive games? The answers are found at www.summerreadingorg, the official Web site designed by Brooklyn Public Library for the 2002 New York State Summer Reading Program, "Splish Splash Read!" "Parents, children and teens can check out the best books to read this summer with a booklist of recommended titles by grade, surf the Internet and link to informative and educational Web sites.," says Beth D. Weinstein, Brooklyn Public Library’s Director of Marketing and Communications. "The Web site is visually exciting and easy-to-use featuring original color illustrations by artist Stephen Campbell." Splish Splash Read means summertimefun! Books are the perfect companion for young vacationers whether on a long road trip or sitting on the beach during the dog days of summer. The "Splish Splash Read!" Web site offers children and teen booklists with over 250 selections, all related to the aquatic theme from Eric Carle’s picture book, A House for Hermit Crab, to Keith Faulkner’s The Wide-Mouthed Frog: A Pop- Up Book. Young people can also explore over 30 Web site links to topics including Shackleton’s Antarctic Odyssey, the legendary Titanic, the Golden Gate and Brooklyn Bridges, crocodiles, the World of Dolphins, Viking history, and The Beast of Loch Ness. There is also a wide selection of educational games for children and teens. In addition to the wealth of information available to the general public, the summer reading Web site provides comprehensive content for school and library program planners. Library systems throughout the state are encouraged to use the resource to create their own summer reading programs.
