What NYC Must Do To Get 2012 Olmpic Games

Before New York can be selected as the Host City for the 2012 Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee, it must be selected by the United States Olympic Committee’s Board of Directors as the nation’s Candidate City. The USOC is looking for a city that can exceed all technical requirements and host a truly spectacular, athlete-friendly Olympic Games. That city must also be capable of bringing the Games back to the United States.

The Host City must meet stringent technical requirements for transportation, accommodations, communications, security, and facilities. It must host over a million visitors for seventeen days - and provide an exciting backdrop for the rest of the world watching on television. Last June, NYC2012 submitted a 600-page plan to the USOC for meeting all of these requirements.

The plan locates all competition venues along two intersecting transit axes, one water and one rail. High-speed ferries would take athletes to venues on the water axis. Special private trains would take them to venues on the rail axis. At the center would be the Olympic Village, where a ferry stop and rail station would let athletes reach nearly every competition venue without traveling on public streets or highways.
