Jury Hearing Testimony In Year-Old Youth Murder
By Charles Rogers

A 17-year-old Canarsie resident is currently on trial in Brooklyn Supreme Court after being arrested a year ago and charged with the murder of a 12-year-old boy outside Canarsie High School.

Rickley Gregorie, 17, is being accused of manslaughter, assault and gang assault for allegedly taking part in the stabbing death of Anthony Haynes on October 19th, 2000. Another youth, Eduardo Hall, also 17, has been charged with murder in the case, since he allegedly wielded the knife. Hall will be tried separately, according to sources at the office of District Attorney Charles Hynes.

Haynes, a student at I.S. 211, apparently became involved in an argument with Hall and Gregorie when the younger boy visited the high school shortly after 2 p.m.

As the argument ensued, a friend of Haynes went home to fetch a gun but was stopped and arrested by a 69th Precinct officer before returning to the school.

Haynes, in the meantime, left the school and was walking on t he block between Flatlands Avenue and Avenue J and was accosted by the two suspects. A knife was flashed and Haynes was stabbed. He managed to make his way across the street but fell to the ground.

Police picked up Hall and Gregorie a short time later. At the time, it was alleged that the suspects were members of the Bloods gang and that Haynes was possibly a member of their adversaries the Crips, but neither connection was officially made.

A spokesperson for the District Attorney’s office said it was unclear when Hall’s trial would take place.
